I want a Happy Ending! How can you describe this film? Based in part on the Gilbert & Sullivan play 'The Pirates of Penzance', this early 80's adaptation adds a bit of early 80's pop music mixed with the traditional theme of the play. When this movie was being made in Australia in 1982, producers were aware that there was also an american film adaptation of the same play being brought to the screen, so they rushed to get it into the theaters first, as a means for it not to get lost in the shuffle. It bombed anyway, but has developed a sort of cult following with the same people who loved 'Xanadu' and 'Grease 2'. Having popular young actors Kristy McNichol and Chris Atkins helped to appeal to younger girls who in turn have become the fans of the movie today. Kristy McNichol plays the part of Mabel (Mabel?), an u gly ducking who becomes smitten with a young man (Akins) she meets at a swordfighting demonstration during Pirate Day at the local marina.
He casually invites her and a few of her friends to go boating the next day. Well, her friends wind up ditching her and in her pursuit to catch up with them in her little sailboat, she winds up getting knocked overboard and.here comes the dream sequence. In the dream she plays Mabel, the daughter of a Major General who dreams of finding true love. Unfortunately, due to a family tradition, she can't get married until all 13 of her sisters are married before her.
All the meanwhile, on the pirate ship, we meet Frederic (without a K), who after his parents were killed by pirates, was rescued by the Pirates of Penzance and was brought up to be a pirate apprentice to the pirate king. Upon his 21st birthday when he earns his freedom, he decides to go out on his own and find true love himself and vows revenge to kill the pirates who left him an orphan. Long story short, he meets Mabel, they fall in love, her dad freaks out because he's a pirate, a little twist of fate has Frederic returning to his band of pirates to serve his duty, and as Mabel and her sisters fight for their freedom from the invading pirates, Mabel and Frederic become unwilling enemies. All this is mixed in with some cheesy 80's pop songs, 'How can I live without her?' And 'Pumping and Blowing' (if that's not a sexual metaphor, I don't know what is!) and some rather amusing jokes here and there.
This isn't Academy material. Nowhere near, but it's a good movie for a rainy Sunday afternoon. It's definitely a little bit of nostalgia for anyone who loves 80's movies. Have a double feature of this and 'Xanadu' and you'll swear it's 1982! The Pirate Movie - Not For Little Kids I waffled between Good & Below Average for this movie, so settled on Average. How can that be, you say?
Well, first the Below Average: despite its title and 'teenish' lead actors, it's got lots of sexual references and at least one scene of comical impending rape. Most of this would go over the heads of little kids but still. Also a little swearing. I would recommend only for kids 13 & up, or as young as 9 if they have been around adults a lot and are relatively sophisticated (like my only child).
Now, for adults - corny acting, corny dialogue, but - for the Good part - it kinda grows on you like good camp does. Singing is not bad, and of course since it's the music from Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, the music itself is great. Watch it with another adult after 10 p.m.
And a fter you've had a couple of beers - or whatever - expecting only camp, and you'll probably have a few good laughs. Don't expect good art.
Fun movie with great songs! This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood! Kristy McNichol is very cute and very funny! She even sings! And Christopher Atkins is lovable, as usual. And Ted Hamilton is super sexy as the Pirate King! A little risque for kids with sexual innuendos, but not crass or vulgar.
I don't understand why it got so many Razzie nominations! It's hilarious! Kind of a spoof or comedic adult version of 'Pirates of Penzance' (even with some of the same songs). Listen for a little-known song by Kool & the Gang! Just wish now they would come out with the soundtrack on CD! My cassette tape if it is worn out! Verified purchase: Yes Condition: Pre-owned.
